  7. Background.
  8.  
  9.    If you are a STACKER 2.0 user with an SSWAPped boot drive, you can now 
  10.    OPTIMIZE with a minimal amount of effort using an upgraded SSWAP.COM.
  11.    This file is available on Compuserve, the STAC BBS, and by mail through
  12.    STAC technical support. 
  13.  
  14.    The upgraded SSWAP handles the many changes OPTIMIZE makes "on the fly."
  15.    It works with QEMM 5.XX as well as the latest version of QEMM 6.  Just 
  16.    copy SSWAP.COM to the STACKER directory in the C: drive as well as the 
  17.    Stacker directory on the SSWAPed host drive.  You can determine the 
  18.    host drive letter by typing: STACKER  at the command line. You must
  19.    also use the /SYNC parameter on the SSWAP device line in Config.sys.

  21.    For example: DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
  22.  
  23.    Note: QEMM may attempt to load the Stacker device driver into an upper 
  24.      memory block that is not large enough to accomodate its 
  25.      initialization size.  If this happens, the Stacker driver will 
  26.      report, "Insufficient high memory, installation aborted."  In this 
  27.      situation, simply edit the Config.sys, remove the references to 
  28.      QEMM in the Stacker device line, and try to re-optimize.  It is 
  29.      also possible that there is simply not enough upper memory to load 
  30.      the device into.  It may have to be left in "low" memory.

  32. Stacker 2.0, /EMS, and the QEMM 6 STEALTH option.
  33.     
  34.    If Stacker is using EMS and you choose to use QEMM's STEALTH
  35.    option, you must include the DBF=2 parameter on the QEMM device line
  36.    in Config.sys. For example: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM ST:M DBF=2

  38.    Note for QEMM 6.00 and 6.01 users: 
  39.  
  40.    If you OPTIMIZE with the SSWAP upgrade and Stacker is using EMS, 
  41.    you will need to follow the simple procedure below.  This is because a 
  42.    conflict occurs when ANY two or more programs, which OPTIMIZE attempts to 
  43.    load high, access EMS memory during the OPTIMIZE process.

  45.    NOTE:  This procedure assumes that SSWAP.COM has already been copied to 
  46.       both STACKER directories.  This procedure is not required for 
  47.       QEMM 5.x, and 6.02 or later.

  49. Procedure.

  51.    1.  Create a text file (using SEDIT) called OPTIMIZE.EXC. (NOTE: the 
  52.        EXC extension stands for "exceptions".  This file lists those device 
  53.        drivers and programs which OPTIMIZE should not attempt to load high.)  
  54.        This file should be placed in the QEMM subdirectory on both the 
  55.        uncompressed and compressed drives.  In most cases, it's sole contents 
  56.        should be the following text: SSWAP.COM
  57.  
  58.        However, any other CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT device drivers and 
  59.        programs which access EMS memory (except for STACKER.COM) should 
  60.        also be listed in this file, each on its own line.

  62.     2. Run OPTIMIZE.
